Pater Noster

Pater Noster (2014)
(SATB choir with organ)
Approximate duration: 13 minutes

MIDI recording (This piece has yet to be performed)

PROGRAM NOTES:
Pater Noster means “Our Father” in Latin. It is the name of what we call in English “The Lord’s Prayer”. The piece explores different textures and compositional techniques for different parts of the prayer. Several sections explore my interest in overlapping repeating melodic patterns of different durations, which sets up arbitrary harmonic shifts, and distorts the perception of time. There is also a traditional fugue which works nicely for parts of the text with more words. The organ accompaniment weaves in and out of the piece and ties together the choral sections with its stark simplicity.
