Piece For Flute With Piano Accompaniment In 3 Movements (1990)
Approximate Duration = 9′ 30″
Live performance:
Angela Taylor, flute
Scott Anthony Shell, piano
PROGRAM NOTES
This piece is a study in melodic phrasing, which I learned by listening to the instrumental jazz greats Wes Montgomery (non commercial recordings), John Coltrane, and Lee Morgan. With much of my music, I apply these melodic phrasing principles to a non-jazz harmonic palette. The piano provides overlapping patterns of different durations in each hand throughout movements 1 and 3. Movement 2 is an attempt to make harmonic dissonance sound beautiful, while not ignoring the principles of melodic phrasing.
